New Project, new choices…..there is nothing I love more than sitting down with a hot cup of coffee, a new pattern, under a cozy blanket in the early morning quiet.
When you crack the seal all the possibilities are let out in to the open to be discovered like a treasure. My Secret Garden was no exception to the rule….I started with a predetermined color palette that soothed my soul and called my name.
My Secret Garden blocks are made up of two colors, a background fabric and an accent fabric. The background fabric and accent fabric are set; so the only real variable is choosing which fabric will be color #1 and which will be color #2.
In my quilt, Color #1 is represented by a beige print and color #2 is represented by a navy print. The accent color is the solid navy and the background is the neutral beige. While I studied the pattern I discovered Sherri Falls, the designer chose only 3 different color groupings and then repeated them. I could have made a different choice but I felt my color palette was neutral and classic and the repetition would give it an overall calming effect.
Once I made this design choice, the next part was easy….every beige print needed a navy print partner….I started laying them out on my table and auditioning my choices.
In general, I like to mix the scale of my fabric prints to create interest and movement in my quilts. For example, I pair a large print with something more subtle rather than putting two subtle or two large prints together.
After I created my pairs, I set them out in a row and arranged how I would like the fabrics to appear in the first row of 3 blocks. The second set of the 3 blocks use the same pattern choices. I used Sherri Falls pattern for the final placement of the completed squares.
